Why BC Hydro Wants All British Columbians to Conserve
Increasing demand for electricity
Forecasts indicate that, over the next 20 years, the demand for electricity in British Columbia will grow by 25 to 45 per cent.
While BC Hydro can buy more electricity from independent power producers and develop additional generating capacity, energy conservation remains the best method to meet that increased demand while still keeping energy costs and our impact on the environment as low as possible.
Saving energy: better for your wallet – and for the environment
The largest part of your BC Hydro bill goes toward the cost of producing electricity and delivering it to you.
By encouraging you to keep your power use down, we can reduce how much power we have to generate through our own hydroelectric dams or buy from outside sources. This not only helps keep our costs lower, it also reduces your energy bills and creates a more secure energy future for British Columbia – and it’s better for the environment.
Three reasons to save energy in your business
As part of your day-to-day business operations, there are many good reasons to save energy, but here are three of the best:
- to save money on your energy bills
- to reduce the amount of energy going to waste around your business, and
- to lighten your impact on the environment.
Fortunately, it’s not hard to make a real difference, both to your energy bills and to our planet. A good place to start is by understanding exactly where the energy goes around your business – for most small and medium-sized businesses, that’s probably lighting, heating/air conditioning and office equipment – and then targeting those areas where simple changes, many no- or low-cost, will have the most impact.
